Скачал и установил себе Ubuntu Linux Live на лаптоп. Шуршит не намного медленнее Windows XP, которая живет там уже давно. И это напрямую с CD. Всего двадцать минут понадобилось, чтобы разобраться как переключаются кодировки (этот пост как раз из-под линуха пишу, в качестве теста). Внешний вид и шрифты немного непривычные, но в остальном вроде проблем нет. Если еще разберусь как запускать мой любимый фотошоп из Линукса – всерьез задумаюсь о переходе. С удовольствием приму советы о том, как это сделать 🙂
Правда, остается вопрос совместимости рабочего места – все-таки программирую я не под Линукс… но на всякий случай заказал второй hard drive к лаптопу – специально под линукс. Ой, что будет…
Только что подключил свой лаптоп через bluetooth к PDA. В смысле – PDA используется в качестве wireless modem. Скорость впечатлила – 91kbps/198kbps. То есть быстрее, чем dial-up, но медленнее, чем DSL. Но опять же – это ЧЕРЕЗ CELLULAR LINK, то есть теперь везде, где работает мой телефон я могу выйти в интернет с приемлимой для меня скоростью. Играться, конечно, нельзя (да оно и не надо), но почту проверить, по форумам походить – запросто.
Я в восхищении! Срочно еду в отпуск и наслаждаюсь этой радостью!
Why does the Red Cross discourage donations of collected goods and individual items for disaster relief?
Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the emergency activities relief workers are attempting to perform. The Red Cross has neither the resources, nor the logistical set-up, to properly handle these types of donations, and therefore cannot accept them.
In addition, because the organization has no way of knowing what spontaneous individual donations or unsolicited collections of items will consist of, and therefore cannot ensure there will be enough of a particular item to distribute it equitably, or if the donated products will even be appropriate for the relief effort.
Shipping donated goods is also costly and particularly difficult in the aftermath of a disaster, as roads are often damaged or impassable, and easily clogged with shipments of non-priority items. The Red Cross makes every attempt to procure items locally to save money by minimizing transportation and storage costs.
